I love pretty labels. But I've always been embarrassingly handicapped when it comes to doing any kind of project on my computer. Until now.
THE CHALLENGE...
One of my tasks this week was to knock out snacks and treat bags for students plus teachers in our oldest child's class since they were having some standardized testing. Usually this kind of thing is not my forte. I was kind of dreading it.
But there is one fab blogger who inspires me weekly. She's a warrior mom and quite the creative diva. I respect how she's rearing her children. I love her ideas. She always makes me laugh. And most of all I'm grateful of how generous she is to those of us who read her blog. [I'll give you her name in a minute. You must first suffer through my rambling.]
IT ALL STARTED WITH THIS...
Just one simple post by this blogger inspired me to turn a potentially mundane task into a fun opportunity to create. I'm going to show you everything I made throughout the course of this week and then share with you who this fab blogger is and how you can get instructions on making deliciously fab self-adhesive labels without spending more than $3.
MY BEGINNING...
The first day this week I was in charge of providing snacks for 58 students and teachers. I'll give it to you straight up, my immediate thought was, "oh crap." I barely have time to feed my own four offspring.
I didn't want to spend a fortune or serve junk, so I tried to keep it simple and healthy. I was thinking fresh fruit and sliced cheese would be yummy.
And there it was, the perfect title to Round One of snacks. "Yum!"
To save $$$ I just bought all the ingredients for the snacks in big packs. Then sliced, diced and peeled at home. Strangely, I enjoyed peeling 20 oranges.
Next day my snack idea was easy. Since I love the look of brown paper bags, I knew they would be a great disposable container for another simple snack. In each bag I put in an apple with an individually wrapped piece of sesame crunch as a super-sweet treat. I thought the label would look best as simple, fun and literal.
VoilĂ .
Again, it was inexpensive but stylish. And healthy! Isn't that a great combo?
And finally came [drum roll please] the "treat bag" day for the kids. I was instructed to provide each student a treat bag as a reward for a week of taking tests. Funny, I don't ever remember getting treats after tests in our school. Maybe my grades would have been better if we had been rewarded with something like little cuttings of LuLu DK fabric?
When I went shopping to find the treat bag inventory, I realized it's really challenging getting 3rd graders goodies without spending a lot. And as far as bags went, all I saw were ones that were cheesy and over-priced. Remember, there aren't that many fab shopping options out here. So I thought to myself, "does their treat really have to be in a bag?"
I had an idea. Clipboards! Yes, all those fabulous MacBeth mini clipboards left me a little obsessed.
So I gathered all the goodies and came back home to assess.
On the day of making the treats I had a sick child helper home from school. After dropping the other three off to their schools that morning, my newly appointed assistant and I ate scrambled eggs then got busy on our project.
Well, I had a helper for about twelve seconds until Pom Pom lured her to join him in playing with ribbon.
Here is how their treats turned out. Cute, huh?
All of my supplies came from the Dollar Tree, Office Max, Michaels and Target. I snagged notepads and mini picture frames from the Dollar Tree. The mini clipboards [$1.69 each] from Office Max. The ribbon [.99 cent spools] and decorative paperclips from Michaels. Tech Deck skateboards are from Target.
For extra fun, I labeled each clipboard with the students' names.
Are you seeing some kind of obsessive label theme in this post? Oh, you noticed. Which brings me to my point [thanks for hanging in there].
WHO'S THE FAB BLOGGER WHO TAUGHT YOU HOW TO MAKE LABELS?
Darby , of course. Have you seen her blog? I love it. She's kind of like a mini-Martha who lives in Alabama while raising three precious tots. She sews, embroiders, smocks, bakes, really does all things domestic. I'd list more, but it would be a mile long.
WHERE CAN I GO FOR HER EXCELLENT TUTORIAL ON MAKING PRETTY LABELS?
Right here.
I have to thank Darby for teaching me something new and inspiring me to find joy in something as simple as serving others.
Finally, I let my little assistant enjoy a big fat powdered donut while the other three were at school. Being my number three child, I feel perpetual mom-guilt about not giving her the attention I think she so deserves. So I took this chance to spoil her a little. Shhhhh, don't tell the others.
And she ate every bite.
